If you have ever typed “plumber near me” or “hairdresser Leeds”, you have seen local SEO from the customer’s side. Google showed you a few businesses on a map and a list of websites, and you picked one of the first. Local SEO is everything that decides whether you end up in there — or somebody else in your place.
Local SEO is the work of being found by somebody who is looking for a service in your town right now. For the map block it is the Google profile that does most of the work; for questions like “how much does it cost to replace a boiler” it is the content on the website. Most local businesses need both.
01Local SEO in one sentence
Local SEO is the work of being found by somebody who is looking for a service in your town right now — a person with a problem, who opens Google and chooses between the few businesses shown to them first.
That is the whole point. It is not about the entire country seeing you, but about the right person seeing you at the right moment — somebody ready to make a call. For a local service that is the most valuable visitor there is: they are not browsing, they are looking for someone to ring.
02The difference between the map and the ordinary search results
When you search for something local, Google usually shows two things on the same page, and it is easy to mix them up.
03What genuinely shifts local visibility
Let us set the tricks aside. Here is what genuinely changes how much people see you in local search — and all of it is something you can check yourself.
A tidy Google profile
The right category, opening hours, real photographs, services filled in. For local results the profile does most of the work.
Consistent details (NAP)
NAP stands for name, address and phone. What matters is that they are the same everywhere — on the website, on the Google profile, on social media, in every advert. When the address or the phone number differs from one place to another, both people and Google lose confidence that it is really you.
Reviews
Genuine comments from satisfied customers build trust and help visibility. Do not invent them and do not buy them — it gets recognised, and it can backfire.
A clear website
A page that says in its first sentence what you do and where, with visible contact details and services listed concretely.
Local signals
Everything that ties Google and the visitor to your place: the town and the surrounding places you cover, the location on the map, the neighbourhoods or nearby towns you travel out to.
You will notice there are no secrets and no shortcuts in there. Local SEO is mostly a run of tidy, consistent small things — not one move after which everything “takes off”.
04When you need local SEO, and when you do not
Here is the part you will rarely hear from somebody selling the service. Local SEO is not for everyone, and there are situations where spending money on it makes no sense.
05Why nobody can honestly guarantee first place
If somebody promises you “first place on Google” for an exact sum and an exact deadline, be careful. The order of results is decided by Google, by its own rules, which change constantly and which nobody outside controls.
On top of that, there is no single “first place”. The result depends on who is searching, from where, on which phone and at what moment — two people in the same town can see a different order.
06Checklist: do you actually need local SEO
- Your customers come from your town and the area, not from across the country
- People look for a service like yours by googling it when they need it
- People currently struggle to find you, or the competition sits above you
- You are not fully booked on recommendations alone and have room for new enquiries
- A call and a customer walking in are genuinely worth more to you than the investment
- You do not work purely online with delivery across the country
07Frequently asked questions
Do I need local SEO if I only have a Google profile?+
The Google profile is the largest part of local visibility and for many small businesses it is a sufficient base. Local SEO is broader than the profile — it also covers the website, consistent details and reviews. If the profile is doing its job and calls are coming in, you do not have to force anything. If people rarely find you or the competition is always above you, that is where the rest of local SEO can help.
How quickly do results show?+
The honest answer: it depends. It depends on how strong the competition is in your town, on the state of your profile and website, and on how consistently you maintain the details and the reviews. There is no fixed number of days we would promise you. Anybody who guarantees an exact deadline is more likely selling certainty than a result.
Is local SEO the same as Google ads?+
No. Ads are paid placements that appear while you pay and disappear the moment you stop. Local SEO is the work of getting search and the map to show you without paying per click. They can be used together, but they are two different things.
Can anybody guarantee me first place?+
Not honestly. The order of results is decided by Google, by rules that nobody outside controls, that change, and that depend on who is searching and from where. The realistic goal is to be a clear, consistent and easily findable choice — not a guaranteed first.
08What next
If the checklist showed you that local SEO makes sense for you, the first step is almost always tidying up the Google profile — because it carries the largest part of local visibility. If you are not sure where to start, see how we do local SEO, and if you want to know what a customer actually sees when they find you on the map, there is a guide of its own on that.
